Job description
Petal is a leading Canadian healthcare orchestration and billing company that revolutionizes healthcare systems to make them agile, efficient, and resilient by enabling the forecasting and shaping of world-class healthcare through Healthcare BI, advanced analytics, and informed insights.
Our commitment to fostering an exceptional workplace culture has earned us notable recognitions, including being listed as a Great Place to Work in both the technology and healthcare sectors. Join us in our mission to empower healthcare innovators and improve healthcare differently.
What you can expect when joining the team
As an Architect, you can expect to join a collaborative and innovative environment where strategic thinking and technical excellence converge. You will own the technical architecture for your delivery team, working as a core member of the leadership quartet alongside the Product Manager, Designer, and Development Manager.
Assigned to a dedicated delivery team of approximately 12 people, you will shape how solutions are built while ensuring they integrate seamlessly within Petal's broader ecosystem. Supported by the Principal Developer and collaborating with fellow architects, you will have the autonomy to design scalable, maintainable systems while mentoring technical leads and developers.
Your expertise and strategic vision will play a pivotal role in translating product requirements into sound technical solutions that drive Petal's mission forward.
Your daily life
In your day to day, you will be led to:
Own the technical architecture for your delivery team's product area, defining system design, component interactions, and technical approaches that fulfill product requirements.
Work in "Sprint 0" mode primarily, staying ahead of development by designing solutions, creating architectural documentation, and preparing technical foundations for upcoming work.
Support ongoing development by being available to address architectural questions, adjust designs based on implementation learnings, and guide the team through complex technical challenges.
Collaborate closely with Product Management and Design from early discovery phases to understand requirements deeply and shape technically sound, feasible solutions.
Partner with the Development Manager to ensure architectural decisions align with team capacity, timelines, and delivery goals.
Define detailed architectural requirements and constraints while empowering Technical Leads to determine implementation specifics.
Coordinate with other Architects and Principal Developers on integration patterns, cross-system dependencies, and how your team's architecture fits within Petal's broader technical ecosystem.
Create and maintain comprehensive architectural documentation, including system diagrams, technical decision records, integration specifications, and design patterns.
Set and enforce technical standards within your delivery team, conducting architecture reviews and ensuring alignment with organizational best practices.
Develop proof-of-concepts and technical spikes when needed to validate architectural approaches, explore new technologies, or de-risk complex implementations.
Manage technical debt strategically, working with the team to balance new feature development with architectural improvements and system sustainability.
Mentor Technical Leads and senior developers in architectural thinking, system design principles, and making sound technical decisions.
Present and communicate architectural decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, articulating trade-offs, risks, and rationale clearly.
Drive continuous improvement in architectural practices, sharing knowledge across the architecture community and contributing to Petal's technical evolution.
Job requirements
Your profile
You are a seasoned technical leader with deep expertise in system design and a passion for building scalable, maintainable architectures. You bring strategic thinking and strong collaboration skills, able to work seamlessly with product, design, and engineering teams while providing technical mentorship and direction. The sky's the limit if you have:
10+ years of software development and architecture experience, with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, production-scale systems.
Strong full-stack architectural knowledge, spanning application layers, infrastructure, data storage, APIs, and cloud services, with sufficient depth to make informed decisions across the entire technical stack.
Expert-level system design skills, with the ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs, design for scalability and resilience, and choose appropriate patterns for different contexts.
Experience working in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Development Managers to shape solutions from concept to production.
Proven ability to create clear, comprehensive technical documentation that enables teams to execute on architectural vision and maintain systems over time.
Strong understanding of integration patterns and distributed systems, with experience coordinating across multiple services and ensuring cohesive system behavior.
Technical standards and governance experience, including conducting architecture reviews, managing technical debt, and establishing best practices.
Demonstrated mentorship capabilities, guiding Technical Leads and senior engineers in architectural thinking and technical decision-making.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences and build consensus around architectural decisions.
Strategic and forward-thinking mindset, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term architectural sustainability and scalability.
Hands-on technical capability, comfortable building proof-of-concepts and diving into code when needed to validate architectural approaches.
Collaborative leadership style, influencing through expertise and partnership rather than authority, and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
Experience with modern cloud platforms and DevOps practices, understanding how architectural decisions impact deployment, operations, and maintenance.
